Mission statement
The mission of NH Adult Education is to provide a variety of educational opportunities to empower adults to become lifelong learners, to support individuals in identifying and achieving their potential academic and/or career goals, and to assist students to become active participants in their communities.
Who should consider NH Adult Ed?
- Adults who need help learning English to help them in their daily lives or to get a better job.
- Adults looking to improve reading, writing or math skills for a job, to prepare for the high school equivalency test, or to attend college or training.
- Adults who want to earn their diploma or high school equivalency for a promotion, a job change, or entry into college or the military.
- Adults seeking to learn basic technology skills or meet requirements for specific training programs.

Facts about Adult Education
Many Adults Need Better Basic Skills For Success At Home And Work
According to the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) in 2017, New Hampshire adults scored better than the national average, but there are more than 295,000 NH residents who scored at the lowest literacy levels (level 1 and 2).
- 11% of New Hampshire adults scored at literacy level 1/needing lots of improvement, which means they only have basic vocabulary and can complete simple tasks that do not require comparing multiple documents.
- 33% of New Hampshire adults scored at literacy level 2/needing some improvement, which means they can compare two or more simple documents but may not be able to interpret or infer information from multiple sources, including digital texts.

Many adults need a high school diploma
- In the U.S., 25 million people 18 and older –10 percent of the adult population – have not graduated from high school.
- New Hampshire has one of the highest percentages of high school graduates in the nation (only 7.4% non-graduates) but there are still 69,300 adults over the age of 25 without high school credentials.
- In New Hampshire, those without a high school diploma or equivalency earn an average of $10,000 per year less than high school graduates.

- English as a Second Language (ESL) is the fastest growing group of adult education students in the country.
- ESL students make up 59% of New Hampshire adult education students.
