Second Start ADP
The Adult Diploma Program (ADP)
This program is for adults who want to earn a high school diploma.
This program is for you if:
- You have some high school credits, but not a diploma
- You have a high school diploma, but need certain high school classes on your transcript to enter into a college or training program
How it works:
A coordinator or counselor will start by looking at your high school transcript to see how many credits you earned in high school. Then you can make a plan to earn the remaining credits you need to graduate. When you have completed the requirements, your adult high school diploma will be granted by the school district that sponsors the program.Â
The Adult Basic Education (ABE)
This program is for adults who need to learn or improve their reading, writing, math, or digital literacy.
This program is for you if:
- You need help with reading, writing, or math skills
- You need help learning how to use a computer
How it works:
The first step is to meet with the program staff to talk about what you need. They will look at the skills you already have and what you would like to learn. They will tell you about all of the options for you. This may include one-on-one tutoring, an in-person class, an online class or a combination of classes.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
This program is for adults who need to learn or improve their English language skills including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and digital literacy.
This program is for you if:
- You are an ESL student
- You are a refugee or immigrant who needs to learn English
- You are a New American with a degree or work experience in another country

The first step is to meet with the program staff to talk about what you need. They will look at the skills you already have and what you would like to learn. They will tell you about all of the options for you. This may include one-on-one tutoring, an in-person class, an online class, or a combination of classes.
High School Equivalency Test Prep
This program is for adults who would like to earn a high school equivalency certificate (HiSET or GED).
This program is for you if:
- You want help preparing to take the national high school equivalency tests (HiSET or GED)
How it works:
The first step is to evaluate the skills that you already have and see if you are ready for the test. The program staff will discuss which test is best for you and how prepared you are to take the test. If you need classes to prepare for the test, they will help you find the right one. They will help you register for and schedule your test. The program counselor will work with you on next steps after your earn your high school equivalency certificate.
NH does not require that you take a preparation class before taking the high school equivalency test. There are specific requirements for students under the age of 18 who want to take the test.
